Business Ethics Vol.1.0 (11-13-2015).pdf - Business Ethics. SCHOOL Sacread Heart. By the end of the buildout phase, the opportunities for individual advantage are largely gone. The rush to invest leads to more competition, greater capacity, and. IT Doesn’t Matter The Idea in Brief To beat your competitors, are you devoting more than 5. If so, you’re not alone. Businesses worldwide pump $2 trillion a year into IT. But like many broadly adopted technologies—such as railways and electrical power—IT has become a commodity. Affordable and accessible to everyone, it no longer offers strategic value to anyone. Scarcity—not ubiquity—makes a business resource truly strategic. Companies gain an edge by having or doing something others can’t have or do. In IT’s earlier days, forward- looking firms trumped competitors through innovative deployment of IT; for example, Federal Express’s package- tracking system and American Airlines’ Sabre reservation system. Now that IT is ubiquitous, however, we must focus on its risks more than its potential strategic advantages. No company builds its strategy on its electrical usage—but even a brief lapse in supply can be devastating. Today, an IT disruption can prove equally paralyzing to your company’s ability to make products, deliver services, and satisfy customers. But the greatest IT risk is overspending—putting your company at a cost disadvantage. Make IT management boring. Instead of aggressively seeking an edge through IT, manage IT’s costs and risks with a frugal hand and pragmatic eye—despite any renewed hype about its strategic value. Worrying about what might go wrong isn’t glamorous, but it’s smart business now. The Idea in Practice To avoid overinvesting in IT: Spend Less. Rigorously evaluate expected returns from IT investments. Separate essential investments from discretionary, unnecessary, or counterproductive ones. Explore simpler and cheaper alternatives, and eliminate waste. Example: Businesses buy 1. PCs annually—yet most workers use PCs for simple applications that require a fraction of their computing power. Start imposing hard limits on upgrade costs—rather than buying new computers and applications every time suppliers roll out new features. Negotiate contracts ensuring long- term usefulness of your PC investments. If vendors balk, explore cheaper solutions, including bare- bones network PCs. Also assess your data storage, which accounts for 5. IT expenditures—even though most saved data consists of employees’ e- mails and files that have little relevance to making products or serving customers. Delay IT investments to significantly cut costs and decrease your risk of buying flawed or soon- to- be obsolete equipment or applications. Today, smart IT users hang back from the cutting edge, buying only after standards and best practices solidify. They let more impatient rivals shoulder the high costs of experimentation. Then they sweep past them, paying less while getting more. Focus on Risks, not Opportunities. Many corporations are ceding control over their IT applications and networks to vendors and other third parties. The consequences of moving from tightly controlled, proprietary systems to open, shared ones? More and more threats in the form of technical glitches, service outages, and security breaches. Focus IT resources on preparing for such disruptions—not deploying IT in radical new ways. In 1. 96. 8, a young Intel engineer named Ted Hoff found a way to put the circuits necessary for computer processing onto a tiny piece of silicon. His invention of the microprocessor spurred a series of technological breakthroughs—desktop computers, local and wide area networks, enterprise software, and the Internet—that have transformed the business world. Today, no one would dispute that information technology has become the backbone of commerce. It underpins the operations of individual companies, ties together far- flung supply chains, and, increasingly, links businesses to the customers they serve. Hardly a dollar or a euro changes hands anymore without the aid of computer systems. As IT’s power and presence have expanded, companies have come to view it as a resource ever more critical to their success, a fact clearly reflected in their spending habits. In 1. 96. 5, according to a study by the U. S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis, less than 5% of the capital expenditures of American companies went to information technology. After the introduction of the personal computer in the early 1. By the early 1. 99. Even with the recent sluggishness in technology spending, businesses around the world continue to spend well over $2 trillion a year on IT. But the veneration of IT goes much deeper than dollars. It is evident as well in the shifting attitudes of top managers. Twenty years ago, most executives looked down on computers as proletarian tools—glorified typewriters and calculators—best relegated to low level employees like secretaries, analysts, and technicians. It was the rare executive who would let his fingers touch a keyboard, much less incorporate information technology into his strategic thinking. Today, that has changed completely. Chief executives now routinely talk about the strategic value of information technology, about how they can use IT to gain a competitive edge, about the “digitization” of their business models. Most have appointed chief information officers to their senior management teams, and many have hired strategy consulting firms to provide fresh ideas on how to leverage their IT investments for differentiation and advantage. Behind the change in thinking lies a simple assumption: that as IT’s potency and ubiquity have increased, so too has its strategic value. It’s a reasonable assumption, even an intuitive one. What makes a resource truly strategic—what gives it the capacity to be the basis for a sustained competitive advantage—is not ubiquity but scarcity. You only gain an edge over rivals by having or doing something that they can’t have or do. By now, the core functions of IT—data storage, data processing, and data transport—have become available and affordable to all. Their very power and presence have begun to transform them from potentially strategic resources into commodity factors of production. They are becoming costs of doing business that must be paid by all but provide distinction to none. IT is best seen as the latest in a series of broadly adopted technologies that have reshaped industry over the past two centuries—from the steam engine and the railroad to the telegraph and the telephone to the electric generator and the internal combustion engine. For a brief period, as they were being built into the infrastructure of commerce, all these technologies opened opportunities for forward- looking companies to gain real advantages. But as their availability increased and their cost decreased—as they became ubiquitous—they became commodity inputs. From a strategic standpoint, they became invisible; they no longer mattered. That is exactly what is happening to information technology today, and the implications for corporate IT management are profound. Vanishing Advantage Many commentators have drawn parallels between the expansion of IT, particularly the Internet, and the rollouts of earlier technologies. Most of the comparisons, though, have focused on either the investment pattern associated with the technologies—the boom- to- bust cycle—or the technologies’ roles in reshaping the operations of entire industries or even economies. Little has been said about the way the technologies influence, or fail to influence, competition at the firm level. Yet it is here that history offers some of its most important lessons to managers. A distinction needs to be made between proprietary technologies and what might be called infrastructural technologies. Proprietary technologies can be owned, actually or effectively, by a single company. A pharmaceutical firm, for example, may hold a patent on a particular compound that serves as the basis for a family of drugs. An industrial manufacturer may discover an innovative way to employ a process technology that competitors find hard to replicate. A company that produces consumer goods may acquire exclusive rights to a new packaging material that gives its product a longer shelf life than competing brands. As long as they remain protected, proprietary technologies can be the foundations for long- term strategic advantages, enabling companies to reap higher profits than their rivals. Infrastructural technologies, in contrast, offer far more value when shared than when used in isolation. Imagine yourself in the early nineteenth century, and suppose that one manufacturing company held the rights to all the technology required to create a railroad. If it wanted to, that company could just build proprietary lines between its suppliers, its factories, and its distributors and run its own locomotives and railcars on the tracks. And it might well operate more efficiently as a result. But, for the broader economy, the value produced by such an arrangement would be trivial compared with the value that would be produced by building an open rail network connecting many companies and many buyers. The characteristics and economics of infrastructural technologies, whether railroads or telegraph lines or power generators, make it inevitable that they will be broadly shared—that they will become part of the general business infrastructure. As long as access to the technology is restricted—through physical limitations, intellectual property rights, high costs, or a lack of standards—a company can use it to gain advantages over rivals. Consider the period between the construction of the first electric power stations, around 1. Electricity remained a scarce resource during this time, and those manufacturers able to tap into it—by, for example, building their plants near generating stations—often gained an important edge. It was no coincidence that the largest U. S. The introduction of electric power again provides a good example. Until the end of the nineteenth century, most manufacturers relied on water pressure or steam to operate their machinery. Carr - Wikipedia. Edward Hallett . Becoming increasingly preoccupied with the study of international relations and of the Soviet Union, he resigned from the Foreign Office in 1. From 1. 94. 1 to 1. Carr worked as an assistant editor at The Times, where he was noted for his leaders (editorials) urging a socialist system and an Anglo- Soviet alliance as the basis of a post- war order. Afterwards, Carr worked on a massive 1. Soviet history entitled A History of Soviet Russia, a project that he was still engaged on at the time of his death in 1. In 1. 96. 1, he delivered the G. Trevelyan lectures at the University of Cambridge that became the basis of his book, What Is History? Moving increasingly towards the left throughout his career, Carr saw his role as the theorist who would work out the basis of a new international order. Early life. We Liberals were a tiny despised minority. This discovery was later to influence his 1. What Is History? Carr later recalled: . Initially, Carr favoured Poland, urging in a memo in February 1. Britain recognize Poland at once, and that the German city of Danzig (modern Gda. In a letter written in 1. Isaac Deutscher, Carr described his attitude to Poland at the time: . He noted that this caused him to react . An early sign of Carr's increasing admiration of the Soviet Union was a 1. Baron Pyotr Wrangel's memoirs where Carr wrote. They were monuments of folly in conception and of incompetence in execution; they cost, directly and indirectly, hundreds of thousands of lives; and except in so far as they may have increased the bitterness of the Soviet rulers against the . It did not come from the rebels or radicals.. It came rather with men like Kipling and Rostand, men loyal to the core to the old traditions, men of genius- and yet who somehow did not quite pull it off.. The great days of the glory of man and his achievements were numbered. The vein was petering out; in some strange way it no longer came off. It was, men said, the end of the Victorian Age.. It was once the vulgar ambition of mankind to make something out of nothing; Proust brought perfection to the more genteel pastime of resolving everything into nothingness. In an article entitled . England has ceased to have ideas, or if, she has them, to believe in the possibility of their fulfillment. Alone among the Great Powers she has ceased to have a mission.. The government of the day has so little faith in its capacity to tackle the major problems of our generation that it invites the other parties to assist with their advice (imagine Mr Gladstone invoking the assistance of Lord Beaconsfield!), and the principle opposition party, knowing full well there is no solution, declines the invitation and keeps its hands free to wash them of the consequences.. We have no convictions beyond a vague sort of fatalism. In particular I was stuck by the fact that everyone professed to believe that tariff barriers were a major cause of aggravation of the crisis, but that practically every country was busy erecting them. I happened to hear a speech by some minor delegate (Yugoslav, I think) which for the first time in my experience put the issue clearly and urgently. Free trade was the doctrine of economically powerful states, which flourished without protection, but would be fatal to weak states. This came as a revelation to me (like the revelation at Cambridge of the relativism of historiography), and was doubly significant because of the part played by free trade in my intellectual upbringing. If free trade went, the whole liberal outlook went with it. Carr wrote in a book review in February 1. This new religion is growing up on the fringes of a Europe which has lost faith in herself. Contemporary Europe is aimlessly drifting, refusing to face unpalatable facts, and looking for external remedies for her difficulties. The important question for Europe at the present time is.. In an essay published in February 1. Fortnightly Review, Carr blamed what he regarded as a putative Versailles treaty for the recent accession to power of Adolf Hitler. For the first time since the war a party appeared outside the narrow circles of the extreme Right which was not afraid to proclaim its pride in being German. It will perhaps one day be recognized as the greatest service of Hitlerism that, in a way quite unprecedented in German politics, it cut across all social distinctions, embracing in its ranks working men, bourgeoisie, intelligentsia and aristocrats. He knows that Marxism is moonshine, but he still nourishes the hope of finding in it a gleam to follow. The nineteenth century saw the end of the period of humanism which began with the Renaissance- the period which took as its ideal the highest development of the faculties and liberties of the individual.. Marx understood that, in the new order, the individual would play a minor part. Individualism implies differentiation; everything that is undifferentiated does not count. The Industrial Revolution would place in power the undifferentiated mass. Not man, but mass- man, not the individual, but the class, not the political man, would be the unit of the coming dispensation. Not only industry, but the whole of civilization, would become a matter of mass- production. In 1. 93. 8, Carr was a leading defender of the Munich Agreement from the left. In his 1. 93. 9 book The Twenty Years' Crisis, Carr argued that the Munich Agreement was just and moral attempt to undo the great wrong done to Germany by the Treaty of Versailles. As a diplomat in the 1. Carr took the view that great division of the world into rival trading blocs caused by the American Smoot Hawley Act of 1. German belligerence in foreign policy, as Germany was now unable to export finished goods or import raw materials cheaply. In Carr's opinion, if Germany could be given its own economic zone to dominate in Eastern Europe comparable to the British Imperial preference economic zone, the U. S. In a memo written on 3. January 1. 93. 6, Carr wrote. Carr's last words of advice as a diplomat was a memo urging that Britain accept the Balkans as an exclusive zone of influence for Germany. In the 1. 93. 0s, Carr saw Hitler as a leader of a . In a speech given on 1. October 1. 93. 7 at the Chatham House summarizing his impressions of those two countries, Carr reported that Germany was . Both the German and Russian regimes, today, represent a reaction against the individualistic ideology prevailing at any, in Western Europe, for the last hundred and fifty years.. The whole system of individualist laissez- faire economy has we know, broken down. It has broken down because production and trade can only be carried out on a nationwide scale and with the aid of State machinery and State control. Now, State control has come in its most naked and undisguised form precisely where the individualist tradition was the weakest, in Germany and Russia. In that book, Carr defended appeasement under the grounds that it was the only realistic policy option. In the spring and summer of 1. Carr was very dubious about Chamberlain's . In Carr's opinion, the entire international order constructed at Versailles was flawed and the League was a hopeless dream that could never do anything practical. Carr contended that the 1. In The Twenty Years' Crisis, Carr wrote. Churchill's judgments to his policy of the moment. In his 1. 93. 9 book The Twenty Years' Crisis, Carr attacked Angell as an Utopian thinker on international relations. Norman Angell, one of the . Carr ended his support for appeasement, which had so vociferously expressed in The Twenty Year's Crisis in the late summer of 1. Churchill's speeches from 1. Carr wrote were . Carr was to write only three more books about international relations after 1. The Future of Nations; Independence Or Interdependence? After the outbreak of World War II, Carr stated that he was somewhat mistaken in his prewar views on Nazi Germany. Through The Twenty Years' Crisis was published just months before World War II began, the Japanese historian Saho Matusumoto wrote that in a sense, Carr's book began the debate on the origins of World War II. But this cannot be achieved through the overweening ambition of one man or one country in defiance of the will of the majority of Europeans and of the whole world outside of Europe. To speculate on better ways of building the new order would at the present time be to divert energy from far more urgent tasks. But two conditions must at least be fulfilled. The new European order cannot be achieved through conquest but only through co- operation and it must unite Europe with the non- European world, not divide Europe from it. We must indeed beware of these values in purely nineteenth- century terms. If we speak of democracy, we do not mean a democracy which maintains the right to vote but forgets the right to work and the right to live. If we speak of freedom, we do not mean a rugged individualism which excludes social organization and economic planning. If we speak of equality, we do not mean a political equality nullified by social and economic privilege. If we speak of economic reconstruction we think less of maximum production (through this too will be required) than of equitable distribution. Nevertheless the British will to victory is still bound up with the conviction that our war aims stand on a different plane from those of the enemy, and that victory for our aims will point the way to a new social and international order in Europe. In turn, Barrington- Ward was to find many of Carr's leaders on foreign affairs to be too radical for his liking. It was obvious that the Russia of the Second World War was a very different place from the Russia of the First- terms of people as well of material resources. Looking back on the thirties, I came to feel that my preoccupation with the purges and brutalities of Stalinism had distorted my perspective. Marriages and Families offers students a comprehensive introduction to many issues facing families in the twenty- first century. The text's major theme ! Marriages and Families balances theoretical and empirical discussions with practical examples and applications. It highlights important contemporary changes in society and the family. This text is written from a sociological perspective and incorporates material from other disciplines: history, economics, social work, psychology, law, biology, medicine, family studies, women's studies, and anthropology. More about the themes: Changes. Examines how recent profound structural and attitudinal changes affect family forms, interpersonal relationships, and raising children. It reaches beyond the traditional discussions to explore racial- ethnic families, single- parent families and gay families as well as the recent scholarship by and about men, fathers, and grandfathers. Contemporary American marriages and families vary greatly in structure, dynamics, and cultural heritage. Thus, discussions of gender roles, social class, race, ethnicity, age, and sexual orientation are integrated throughout this book. To further strengthen students understanding of the growing diversity among today's families, the author included a series of boxes that focus on families from many cultures. Choices. On the individual level, family members have many more choices today than ever before. People feel freer to postpone marriage, to cohabit, or to raise children as single parents. As a result, household forms vary greatly, ranging from commuter marriages to those in which several generations live together under the same roof. Constraints. Although family members choices are more varied today, we also face greater macro- level constraints. Benokraitis Soc 3 Free PdfOur options are increasingly limited, for example, by government policies. Economic changes often shape family life and not vice versa. Political and legal institutions also have a major impact on most families in tax laws, welfare reform, and even in defining what a family is. Because laws, public policies, and religious groups affect our everyday lives, the author has framed many discussions of individual choices within the larger picture of the institutional constraints that limit our choices. Ben was born amidst the turmoil of the devastating Yuuzhan Vong War, where an extra- galacticspecies known as the Yuuzhan Vong invaded the galaxy, laying waste to dozens of worlds. As both of his parents were Jedi, they were unable to spend time with him as they fought in the war, so Skywalker was taken care of by his aunt and uncle, former Rebel heroes Han and Leia Solo.
Radical Face Ghost Rar DownloadHe was subsequently moved to the Shelter in the Maw, where many other young Jedi apprentices stayed. The Yuuzhan Vong were eventually repelled and a ceasefire was negotiated, but young Skywalker felt the pain of war through the Force, overwhelming him and causing him to close himself off from the Force for several years. The Killik species had recently been discovered in the Unknown Regions of the galaxy, when a group of Jedi Knights heard their telepathic call and followed it to the Unknown Regions. Skywalker became partially joined to the Gorog. Oye Records houses a fantastic range of music. One of the biggest limitations of Google Home, Google’s voice-controlled speakerbot, was that it couldn’t tell anyone apart so all your requests were centered on. Killik nest and formed an owner- pet relationship with one of the Gorog Killiks, who was actually trying to turn him against his mother. However, Ben's parents discovered the Killik's plan and captured it. During this time, Skywalker was taken under the wing of his cousin Jacen Solo, who became his informal Jedi Master. Solo, who had just returned to the New Jedi Order after a five- year journey to learn more about the Force, was able to help Skywalker open himself up to the Force gradually, as Skywalker was still apprehensive about the Force and needed years to become fully adjusted to the Force. With Solo's guidance, Skywalker was able to grow confident in his usage of the Force and become a powerful Jedi. During this time, Skywalker joined the Galactic Alliance Guard, a secret police force designed to combat Corellian terrorism, which was led by Jacen Solo. The GAG controversially began interning Corellians on Coruscant, an action which greatly worried his parents. Skywalker was increasingly used on violent missions, including the assassination of Corellian politician. Dur Gejjen. Meanwhile, Jacen Solo had fallen to the dark side of the Force under the tutelage of Sith Lady. Lumiya, taking the Sith name Darth Caedus. Caedus eventually took over the Galactic Alliance before killing Mara Jade Skywalker. Skywalker correctly believed that Caedus was the killer and attempted to kill Caedus several times, including in a heated battle over Kashyyyk. He decided to legitimately investigate with his friend in the GAG, Lon Shevu, and was able to prove that Caedus had murdered his mother. Eventually Caedus himself was eliminated in a lightsaber duel, and the Second Galactic Civil War ended. By that time, anti- Jedi sentiment had risen greatly, especially due to an unexplained madness among young Jedi. Skywalker accompanied his father into exile, where the two visited several Force- based organizations with whom Solo had studied during his five- year sojourn—first the Baran Do, where they discovered a secret sect of monks known as the Hidden Ones, then the secretive Aing- Tii, and then the Mind Walkers in a mysterious space station known as Sinkhole Station. While at the station, the two were attacked by a group of Sith, but the two were able to escape. However, Ben and his father continued to cross paths with the Sith, and after a heated encounter on Dathomir, Ben and his father formed an unprecedented alliance with the Sith in order to defeat Abeloth, the supernatural being who was spreading insanity among the Jedi, and allegedly among young Sith apprentices as well. During this alliance, Ben formed a close relationship with the young Sith apprentice Vestara Khai. Eventually, the Sith betrayed their Jedi allies, though Ben and Luke were able to escape and defeat Abeloth, ending the psychosis. Subsequently, Ben and Luke stayed behind with a few Sith to learn more about Abeloth's origins. After further exploration of Abeloth's planet, Ben, Luke, and Vestara faced off against Abeloth and the Sith once again on Pydyr, severing the alliance as the Skywalkers and Vestara continued their hunt for Abeloth. To Luke's dismay, Ben and Vestara's bond continued to grow despite Vestara's multiple betrayals, eventually evolving into a romantic relationship after Vestara was forced to kill her father and turned to the light side. Suppose I named him Obi- Wan, as a salute to my old master? Would he think that means that I want him to grow up to be a Jedi? Would he think he had to live up to Ben's reputation? In their invasion of the galaxy, the Yuuzhan Vong took to using a variety of creatures native to their own galaxy. Anor was an advance scout sent into the galaxy before the main invasion force, and he tested his spores on a group of one hundred New Republic diplomats on the planet Monor II with great success. Only one survived—former Imperial spy and Jedi Master. Mara Jade Skywalker. Since the spores worked by breaking down the molecular structure of its victim, Mara Jade believed that it was impossible for her to have a child, as the spores would surely induce miscarriage. However, one year after the Yuuzhan Vong invasion, Mara Jade Skywalker felt something growing inside of her. At first, she thought it was a recurrence of her disease, but she sensed the essence of her husband Luke inside of it. To her shock, despite the disease, Mara Jade Skywalker was pregnant. But Luke Skywalker managed to calm her down and assuage her fears, and the two agreed to keep the child's existence a secret. Meanwhile, anti- Jedi sentiment among the citizens of the New Republic was growing more prevalent, exacerbated by an offer extended by the Yuuzhan Vong—kill all the Jedi, and the invaders would halt their assault on the Jedi. While the offer was turned down by the New Republic, the galaxy was becoming more and more dangerous for the Jedi Knights. The Skywalkers were on the Coruscant beach when they were informed by Jedi Master Kenth Hamner of an arrest warrant put out on the Skywalkers by New Republic Head of State. Borsk Fey'lya for disobeying an order. She awoke under the care of an MD- 1. However, the Skywalkers were forced to flee Coruscant due to the warrant and stayed aboard the Errant Venture, an Imperial II- class Star Destroyer owned by former smuggler. Booster Terrik which was being used as a makeshift Jedi academy for hiding Jedi students. The Skywalkers immediately sought medical care once aboard the Star Destroyer, and Mara Jade's condition was rapidly worsening. Her coomb spore disease had returned, stronger than ever before, and Mara Jade expended all her energy, keeping it from attacking her womb at the cost of her own health. The Skywalkers were unsure how to handle the situation; the Skywalkers surmised that Jedi healer. Cilghal would be able to induce labor, but Mara believed it would kill them both. Desperate, Skywalker attacked the disease with the dark side of the Force, but was stopped by Mara. Skywalker then fought the disease with the light side of the Force, vanquishing the disease, and Mara went into labor. Despite the disease's attack on her body, Mara Jade Skywalker gave birth to a baby boy on the Errant Venture. The Skywalkers would name the boy Ben, after Luke Skywalker's Jedi Master, Obi- Wan . After Ben's birth, the Skywalkers were notified by Borsk Fey'lya that they would be allowed to return to Coruscant, and the arrest warrant had been lifted. C- 3. PO is aboard with your package. Viqi Shesh ambushed us in the docking bay, and I was so furious—. During this time, Skywalker was looked after by a nanny droid named Nanna. Shortly after his birth Skywalker accompanied his mother and father to Bilbringi, where his parents and a fellow Jedi, the Barabel. Saba Sebatyne, watched an important meeting between New Republic representatives Han and Leia Organa Solo and the recently- captured Nom Anor. While the meeting was going on, the infant Ben stayed in his mother's starship, Jade Shadow, accompanied by his cousin Jaina Solo and New Republic scientist and Skywalker family friend Danni Quee. Anor was set free once the meeting was concluded, and Skywalker and his parents returned to his birthplace, the Errant Venture. While aboard the Venture, Skywalker broke out into an uncontrollable fit of crying which his parents could not ease. However, when his aunt Leia Organa Solo asked to hold him, to Luke and Mara Jade's surprise, the infant calmed down almost instantly. The infant was later taken to stay with his aunt and uncle, Han and Leia Solo, in their home on Coruscant. Little did his family know, a plot had been formulated by the Yuuzhan Vong to kidnap Ben Skywalker, with traitorous New Republic Senator. Viqi Shesh as the kidnapper. Shesh initially attempted to take Skywalker in his aunt and uncle's home, but her plan was foiled. A short time later, Coruscant was attacked by the Yuuzhan Vong. Amidst the chaos of the battle, Shesh made a desperate second attempt to kidnap Skywalker. The Solos were confronted by Shesh in a Coruscant docking bay, but the Solos did not allow their nephew to fall into Shesh's hands. They placed the infant under the care of their protocol droid, C- 3. PO, entrusting Ben's safety to him while they tried to apprehend Shesh. However, in the confusion, C- 3. PO was swept aboard a starferry named the Byrt, with Skywalker still in its arms. Luke and Mara Jade Skywalker promptly set out in their X- Wingstarfighters, hoping to catch up to the ferry and retrieve their child. At the same time, Shesh notified the Yuuzhan Vong invasion force of Skywalker's presence aboard the Byrt. The Yuuzhan Vong reached the Byrt first and began searching the vessel for Skywalker. Fortunately for Skywalker, family friend Lando Calrissian and a squad of YVH droids boarded the ship afterward and attacked the Yuuzhan Vong. Working on roofs – Worksafe. Summary. 01 / Introduction. A fall from height is the most serious hazard associated with roof work. Preventing falls from roofs is a priority for Work. Safe New Zealand. They expect principals, employers, and contractors with staff working on roofs to actively manage any potential for falls. Guardrail code guide: stair landing guardrail codes, porch guardrail. Investigations by Work. Safe into falls while working at height show: more than 5. More injuries happen on residential building sites than any other workplace in the construction sector, and of falls experienced by roofers: 2. In December 2. 01. Work. Safe initiated a targeted programme to address the issue through the Preventing Falls from Height Project. These guidelines support this project and give all who are involved with working on roofs a clear direction on how to manage the work in a way that will bring down the death and injury toll. Scope and application. The Good Practice Guidelines for Working on Roofs provides practical guidance to employers, contractors, employees, designers, principals, persons who control a place of work, and architects who are engaged in work associated with roofing. These guidelines also outline how people working on roofs, and those associated with the work, can meet their obligations under the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1. HSE Act) and the HSE Regulations 1. These guidelines and adherence to them may be relevant as evidence in a court. These guidelines apply to a wide range of work situations where workers are placed in a position from which falls are possible. These situations include repairs and maintenance work on roofs. The guidelines outline what Work. Safe and the roofing industry currently consider best practice for working safely on roofs. Workers who need to access roofs and to whom these guidelines will apply include: roofersbuildersplumbersheating and ventilation installersair conditioning installerspaintersinstallers of telecommunications equipmentdemolition contractorshome or property owners or inspectorschimney sweeps. The Good Practice Guidelines for Working on Roofs provides practical guidance to those who have duties under the HSE Act and Regulations. The Good Practice Guidelines for Working on Roofs is not industry- specific and gives general advice for working on roofs. If those working on roofs are from a specific industry (for example, electrical industry), the safety guidance from that industry should also be consulted. Factory Stairways Ladders And Handrails Handbook 44These guidelines are not intended to provide all information relating to safe working on roofs. Detailed information on safety equipment used for working at height is covered in the Good Practice Guidelines for Working at Height in New Zealand and other Work. Safe NZ guidance on working at height. Further information about working at height which supplements these guidelines is available on the . People with a duty must take all practicable steps to ensure the safety of workers when they are exposed to the potential of a fall, or where the hazard of working at height exists. The Act is underpinned by a number of regulations. A full copy of the Act and the associated regulations can be downloaded without charge at www. Compliance with the Act’s associated Regulations is also mandatory. Regulation 2. 1 of the HSE Regulations 1. Factory Stairways Ladders And Handrails Handbook For The Recently Deceased
It is mistakenly believed that no controls are needed where a person faces a fall of less than three metres. That belief is wrong and ignores the overarching duties in the Act. The Act requires that if there is a potential for a person at work to fall from any height, reasonable and practicable steps must be taken to prevent harm from resulting. Short duration work at height shall be treated the same way as any other activity at height. Appropriate fall prevention controls shall be put in place, regardless of the time duration of the task. Short duration work means work that lasts minutes rather than hours. It may not be reasonably practicable to provide full edge protection for short duration work but it still needs to be considered during the assessment of hazards, and appropriate controls must be put in place. Doing nothing is not an option. Managing hazards. Identify hazards through planning. Planning a safe approach to a job can help identify the hazards associated with any work on a roof. Planning safe work takes into account the hazard management process: identify the hazardsassess the hazards - decide if the identified hazards are significant. How badly harmed would someone be if they fell and how likely is a fall? If serious harm could result, then it’s a significant hazardcontrol the hazards – either by eliminating, isolating or minimising the hazarddocument this information in a work planmonitor the work plan. All workers should understand the contents of the work plan, and be competent to safely complete the work. Assess and control the hazards. A hazard assessment shall be carried out for all work on roofs. It is essential that the hazards are identified before the work starts and that the necessary equipment, appropriate precautions, and systems of work are provided and implemented. Hazard identification should be repeated periodically or when there is a change in conditions; for example, the weather or numbers of staff onsite. Where workers could fall from a roof, there is a very simple hierarchy of controls that shall be considered by duty holders: can the job can be done without exposing persons to the hazard (eliminate)? This can often be done at the design, construction planning, and tendering stages. This includes working on single- storey buildings and structures. An example is using the existing scaffolding as edge protection. If this is not practicable, then elevating work platforms or temporary work platforms should be used. This means considering the use of total restraint systems, work positioning systems, safety mesh, safety nets, and fall arrest systems. Figure 1: A worker maintains three points of contact while working from a ladder. Ladders should only be used as a means of access, and for short duration maintenance work such as touching up paint. People using ladders should be trained and instructed in the selection and safe use of ladders. Ladders should be regularly inspected and well maintained to ensure they are safe to use. In a workplace, a ladder should meet the standard AS/NZS 1. Portable ladders – Part 1: Metal. Your work plan should include information about: safe access to the roof areaassessment of the roofing materialsidentify hazards associated with working at height from or through the roofbrittle roofing assessmentother working at height hazards (for example, weather, electricity)establishing equipment and hazard controls for working at heightsafe working practicetraining and supervision. The work plan should clearly set out: who is responsible for implementing the control measures and supervising the workwhat specific steps are required to carry out the work safelyhow these steps are to be done. The person responsible for the work plan should be a competent person, who should also act as site supervisor. Enough time should be allowed to complete the staging of operations given the number of staff available, the availability of equipment, and an allowance for unsuitable weather. Written safety information and the work plan shall be kept for the duration of the job. It is the responsibility of the lead contractor or principal to inform all workers on site that they must adhere to the requirements of the work plan and safety information and the before any person seeks or gains access to the roof. The lead contractor or principal must provide a prominent notice stating the safety requirements and any limitations for the site. Discussion about the plan, hazards, and control measures can be undertaken at . These meetings can also be used to train workers on the hazards associated with working on roofs including falling from an edge or through brittle roofing material. Safe access to roof areas. Where there is no permanent access to roof areas, provide temporary access that is properly constructed. Scaffolding, constructed work platforms or mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) are the preferred means of temporary access. Where this is not practicable, portable industrial- grade ladders with a load rating of at least 1. For major roofing work, provide a scaffold stairway access tower. Never allow workers to use barrow hoists to gain access to the roof. Assessment of the roofing material. Roofing material deteriorates with age and does not perform as it did when it was installed. Before commencing work on an existing roof, inspect it thoroughly to determine its strength. This should, when possible, include inspection from inside the building as well as externally. Check the fixing and strength of safety mesh, paying particular attention to any signs of heavy corrosion. If there is sarking or an underlay, this will inhibit the close inspection of the sheeting. Excessive sagging or deflection (out of alignment) of the trusses/rafters may indicate deterioration of the structure. Strengthen any suspect areas of roof support with temporary props. If there has been a fire, the structure must be certified as safe to work on by a structural engineer. Skylights and penetrations left for the installation of air- conditioning can be a danger to roof workers. Fibreglass or plastic sheeting skylights should be checked and added to the interior plan of the roof so that hazard controls can be put in place to prevent the potential of a fall. Even skylights with safety mesh can create a hazard as the worker can still break through and while not fall to the ground, could still receive cuts from jagged edges. Brittle roofing consists of any flat, trough, or corrugated material such as asbestos cement, plastic, or glass, whether reinforced or otherwise, or any other roofing material that, due to its properties, age, or weathering, will not safely support a person at all points on its surface. In niciun caz pentru ca as vrea sa o uit... Ce era in sufletul meu, numai Dumnezeu stie.. Dumnezeu mi- a dat putere... Ecranul era doar in nuante de gri.. Doctorita a tacut si apoi a spus..”Imi pare rau..” TOTUL in mine, s- a prabusit.... A trait in mine si am simtit- o.. Parca dormea... I- am vorbit in soapta si i- am cantat... Atunci cand am intrat in casa, cu bratele goale... Atunci cand am inmormantat- o... Atunci cand, in loc sa aranjez in dulapior hainutele si jucariile pe care i le pragatisem, le- am impachetat... Si de atunci incoace... What is quality healthcare? Quality healthcare is: Better Care and Better Health at Lower Cost. All FEHB plans support quality with educated health.
